Why Radiation?

Why Radiation?

Why It's Used

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to damage the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from growing or dividing. Doctors may use radiation as a standalone treatment or alongside surgery or chemotherapy, depending on the type, size, and location of the tumor.

Unlike chemotherapy, which affects the whole body, radiation is usually targeted to a specific area. However, while it's localized, radiation can still affect nearby healthy cells — especially those that divide quickly, like skin cells and the lining of internal organs — leading to side effects like skin irritation, fatigue, and digestive issues in the treated area.

Some Side Effects

Some Side Effects

Radiation is typically given daily (Monday through Friday) over several weeks in a hospital or outpatient clinic. The actual procedure is quick and painless, but maintaining a consistent schedule is key for effectiveness. During each session, patients lie on a treatment table while a machine delivers precisely targeted beams to the affected area.

Side effects usually don't appear right away; most develop gradually after several sessions as the radiation accumulates in the body. Common side effects include fatigue, localized skin changes (like redness or peeling), and soreness in the treatment area.

Preparing the Body

Preparing the Body

Patients often need to make small but meaningful changes to support their bodies during radiation treatment. One important adjustment is switching to gentle, fragrance-free skin care products, especially for areas receiving radiation. Harsh ingredients, dyes, and perfumes can worsen skin irritation or interfere with healing. Having lots of moisture all day & night after treatment is key.

Loose-fitting clothing, mild soaps, and gentle lotions become essential tools for comfort and protection. Staying hydrated, eating well, and prioritizing rest are also key parts of preparing for and coping with the effects of radiation therapy. As always, the doctors know each patient's case best.
