What Chemo Really Is...
The Basics
Chemo is a treatment that uses powerful medications to destroy cancer cells, often by targeting how they grow and divide. Doctors choose chemo based on the type/stage of cancer, how aggressive it is, and whether it has spread.
Chemo drugs are designed to interrupt the cell cycle and stop cancer cells from multiplying. However, chemo also affects other fast-growing healthy cells in the body, such as those in the hair follicles, digestive tract, bone marrow, and mouth. This damage is what leads to common side effects like hair loss, mouth sores, lowered immunity, and gastrointestinal issues.

What It's Like
Most chemotherapy is delivered via IV at an infusion center, where patients sit for hours at a time in a relaxed medical environment.
Treatment is usually given in multiple cycles — a few days or weeks in all, followed by rest periods to allow the body to recover. Most side effects don’t begin until a day or two after treatment, when the medication has impacts the body. Every person’s experience is different, but fatigue, nausea, and other symptoms often build over time as treatment progresses.
New systems like cooling caps can slow or decrease certain side effects like hair loss.

Changing the Routine
Before starting treatment, many patients prepare both mentally and physically — organizing support, adjusting schedules, and packing comfort items for the infusion center.
One important change involves switching out everyday personal care products. Because chemotherapy can make the skin and body extremely sensitive, patients are advised to avoid products with dyes, fragrances, sulfates, or harsh chemicals. This includes lotions, shampoos, deodorants, and even laundry detergents.
Using gentle, fragrance-free products can help reduce irritation, allergic reactions, and discomfort during a time when the body needs extra care.
